Amethyst Meaning & Properties

This deep purple quartz has been treasured for thousands of years, and it is still the stone women reach for when they want a quieter mind and a calmer evening. Traditionally the stone of calm and clarity, it is February's birthstone and a beautiful place to begin.

Meet Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, the same mineral family as clear quartz and citrine — in fact, heat is what turns amethyst's purple toward citrine's gold, both in nature and in the jeweler's oven. It grows in pointed clusters inside hollow volcanic rock, and the finest deep-purple material has long come from Brazil and Uruguay, with paler lilac stones from many other places. Its color comes from trace iron, shifted to violet by natural irradiation over millions of years.
Real amethyst varies — pale at the base of a point, deepest at the tip, sometimes banded with white in the pattern called chevron amethyst. That variation is your friend: glass imitations tend to be one flat, bubble-filled purple, and dyed stones pool unnatural color in their cracks. A genuine piece feels cool and heavy in the hand, and no two clusters are alike.

How to Cleanse & Charge It
Amethyst is sturdy (Mohs 7), so everyday care is easy. Water: rinse briefly under lukewarm water or wash gently with mild soapy water and pat dry — skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can damage the stone. Smoke: pass it through sage or palo santo smoke. Sound: a singing bowl or bell works beautifully. Sunlight, with care: this is the big one — amethyst is light-sensitive, and long stretches of strong sun will fade its purple, so never cleanse it with a day on a sunny sill.
To charge it, choose shade and moonlight instead: a windowsill overnight under the moon, a few hours on a selenite plate, or simply holding it while you set a clear intention for the week ahead. Store it in a soft pouch or shaded spot, and that violet will stay rich for years.
Chevron Amethyst
Chevron Amethyst is amethyst's banded variety: violet amethyst layered with white quartz in V-shaped stripes — the chevrons that give it its name. You will also see it sold as banded amethyst, and sometimes as dream amethyst, which is a marketing name for the same stone. It is the same quartz family and the same Mohs 7 hardness as the amethyst above; the white bands simply make it milkier and more patterned, so no two pieces stripe the same way. Care is identical, including the one caution that matters — strong, prolonged sun can fade the violet, chevron bands included.
