Meet Tiger's Eye
Tiger's Eye is a member of the quartz family — a microcrystalline quartz known as a chatoyant chalcedony. Its story starts with crocidolite, a fibrous blue mineral that grows in neat parallel strands. Over millions of years, silica-rich quartz grew alongside those fibres and gradually took their place, keeping their structure. The iron in the fibres oxidised into iron oxide, painting the stone in bands of golden yellow, amber and rich reddish brown.
That preserved fibre structure is the whole trick. When polished Tiger's Eye is cut into a smooth dome or bead, light reflects off those parallel fibres in one bright, moving band — chatoyancy, the cat's-eye effect. Tilt the stone and the band rolls. No two pieces band in quite the same way. Most Tiger's Eye comes from the Northern Cape of South Africa and Western Australia, and ancient warriors are said to have carried it as a talisman of courage and protection.
