10 tips for a healthy guide to restaurant eating.

  • Check the restaurant menu prior to arriving at the restaurant. Have a few selections picked out so you don’t feel rushed when ordering.

  • Check for a “skinny/lighter fare/500 calorie” section. Most restaurants have these now and it simplifies things greatly. You still need to be aware of the sugar content.

  • Ask how the items are prepared (Cooked in oil, butter, have a sugary glaze, sauce, etc.)

  • Do not be afraid to order the food cooked to your liking: Ask for steamed veggies, a protein with no sauce or sauce on the side.

  • Consider ordering a healthy appetizer and splitting a meal with someone else. Or take half of your meal home with you.

  • Order a salad with dressing on the side and dip your salad into the dressing rather than pouring the dressing on the salad. You will consume a fraction of the dressing.

  • Opt for oil and vinegar or bring your own dressing to the restaurant.

  • Decline the breadbasket that almost always accompanies a meal.

  • If you plan to indulge in an adult beverage, choose a glass of wine or a drink mixed with water rather than a sugary drink.

  • Finish the meal off with a cup of hot water and lemon. This signals to your body that you are done with eating for the day.

  • BONUS #11 If you are due a treat meal, plan for it. Do not become a victim of circumstance and eat off-plan because you did not plan for the meal out.
